Privacy notice
Last updated 21 October 2026.
SocioLens collects as little about its readers as a website can. This notice says what that is, why, on what legal basis, who receives it and how long it is kept.
In short
- No cookies.
- No analytics and no advertising, and no tracking by SocioLens. What the host and, once a sign-up opens, the email provider record is described below.
- No third-party scripts, fonts, images or embedded content. Every file a page loads comes from this site.
- No accounts. You do not need to give your name or email address to read the site; your browser's requests carry technical data (see Reading the site).
- No automated decisions about you, and no profiling.
Who is responsible
The site names its publisher as SocioLens project. The controller of personal data under the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) is [To be completed by the publisher before launch: publisher legal name], [To be completed by the publisher before launch: postal address], [To be completed by the publisher before launch: country of establishment].
Contact: [To be completed by the publisher before launch: contact email]
Reading the site
Every page is a static file. Your browser asks the host for a page and the host sends it. SocioLens runs no program of its own on the server, and pages other than search contain no JavaScript. The Atom feeds are files on this site too: a feed reader fetches them like any page.
- Data
- Technical data that comes with each request, such as your IP address, the address requested, the time and your browser type. Cloudflare's responses also ask your browser to report failed connections to Cloudflare (Network Error Logging).
- Purpose
- To deliver the pages and files you ask for, and to protect the site and its host against abuse and attacks.
- Legal basis
- Legitimate interest (GDPR Article 6(1)(f)). The interest is to deliver the site to the people who ask for it and to keep it secure and available.
- Who receives it
- The host. This preview, at sociolens-web.pages.dev, is hosted on Cloudflare Pages, which builds it from the project's code repository. Cloudflare is a United States company, so the data may be processed outside the European Union. Which safeguard Cloudflare relies on for such transfers has not been checked yet. SocioLens adds no logging of its own.
- How long it is kept
- As long as Cloudflare's own policy sets: see Cloudflare's privacy policy.
At its launch address the site will be hosted by [To be completed by the publisher before launch: production host]. That host's privacy notice: [To be completed by the publisher before launch: production host's privacy notice URL]. Where that host processes data, and how transfers are covered: [To be completed by the publisher before launch: where the production host processes request data, the safeguard for any transfer outside the EU, and whether it collects Network Error Logging reports] This notice will then describe that host.
Search
Search runs in your browser. The search page loads its program and its index from this site and does the matching itself, so your search is not sent to any search service. The browser downloads only the parts of the index it needs, and which parts depends on the words you type.
- Data
- The requests for the search program and for parts of the index, with the same technical data as any other request. Because the parts fetched depend on the words you type, these requests can hint at what you searched for. SocioLens does not record searches.
- Purpose
- To run the searches you ask for.
- Legal basis
- As for reading the site: legitimate interest (Article 6(1)(f)).
- Who receives it
- As for reading the site: the host.
- How long it is kept
- As for reading the site: as long as the host's own policy sets.
Newsletter and Pro waitlist
No sign-up form is open, so the site collects no email addresses. Before a form opens, this notice will say who receives the addresses, why, on what legal basis and for how long.
When the newsletter and Pro waitlist forms open, they will send the email address you type directly to [To be completed by the publisher before launch: newsletter provider name], which will store it and send the emails. The SocioLens site itself will store nothing. The provider's privacy notice: [To be completed by the publisher before launch: newsletter provider's privacy notice URL].
Writing to SocioLens
You can write to the contact address with a question, to report an error, or to exercise your data protection rights. Please do not send sensitive information, such as details of your health, religion, political opinions or sex life, unless your request needs it.
- Data
- Your email address, your name if you give it, what you write and attach, and the replies.
- Purpose
- To read and answer your message. For an error report, also to check it and, if it is right, to correct the research record. A correction is published as a new version that says what changed. It names you only if you agree.
- Legal basis
- Legitimate interest (GDPR Article 6(1)(f)). The interest is to answer the people who write and to keep the research record correct. Answering a request under your data protection rights is a legal obligation (Article 6(1)(c); Articles 12 and 15 to 22). Keeping the request, the reply and a note of what was done rests on legitimate interest (Article 6(1)(f)): to show how the request was handled, and to establish or defend legal claims.
- Who receives it
- The publisher, and the email service that hosts the contact mailbox, which stores the messages for the publisher: [To be completed by the publisher before launch: the company that hosts the contact mailbox, whether it processes mail outside the EU, and the safeguard; and any AI service that reads or sorts it]
- How long it is kept
- While the matter is being dealt with, then deleted, at the latest 12 months after the last message in the exchange. A data protection request, the reply and a note of what was done are kept for 3 years after the reply, so the publisher can show how the request was handled, and are then deleted.
Your rights
Under the GDPR you can ask the publisher for access to personal data about you, for its correction or deletion, to restrict its use, and, where it applies (a use based on consent or on a contract), for a copy in a portable form. You can object, on grounds relating to your situation, to a use based on legitimate interest. Where a use rests on your consent, you can withdraw consent at any time. Write to the contact address above.
The publisher answers without undue delay and within one month. Where the GDPR allows, that can be extended by up to two further months; you are then told why within the first month.
You can also complain to a data protection authority, in particular in the EU country where you live, where you work or where you think the law was broken.
No law or contract requires you to give SocioLens personal data. Without your email address, the newsletter cannot be sent to you and a message cannot be answered.
